A 75-year-old husband, father of four and grandfather of three looks forward to the day in the not-too-distant future when he and his family of nine will have a home of their own in Katabi Town council – Bulega Village.
Abubaker and his family, currently live in a one roomed house with no ventilation, a mud floor, and roofed with rusted iron sheets that is divided into two with a curtain to separate parent’s and children’s bed rooms.
But with help from Habitat for Humanity Uganda under the Decent Living Campaign, in partnership with the Kingdom of Buganda, Rainbow International School, Housing Finance Bank and Shelter and Settlements Alternatives among others, Abubaker will soon own his own new house.
“This will be something new to us, we can’t wait to have a more spacious home.” Abubaker said.
The new home is the first being built under Habitat for Humanity Uganda’s Decent Living Campaign; an initiative aimed to improve the lives of vulnerable communities in Uganda by seeking the support of corporate partnerships especially through their Corporate Social Responsibility and the good will of well-wishers.
Habitat for Humanity Uganda believes in a “hand up” not a “hand out” and like all our beneficiaries, Abubaker and his family will put in over 100 hours of sweat equity toward his home.
The Second Deputy Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Buganda Owek. Robert Waggwa Nsibirwa was the guest of honour for the day. He was grateful for HFH Uganda’s focus on affordable housing because housing is a fundamental human right. Owek. Nsibirwa also pledged the Kingdom’s continued support of the Campaign and emphasized on the need to have model houses constructed in all the counties of the Kingdom.
Habitat for Humanity Uganda’s Deputy National Director Laetitia Kiyingi said the Campaign will meet a need in the communities for affordable housing. “It’s exciting for us, our partners and the communities,” Laetitia said. “We try to make a difference in the lives of the families that we serve. This is life changing.”
Habitat for Humanity Uganda is in the process of selecting its second homeowner under the Decent Living Campaign and we hope to complete the first three homes in 2019.
