Equitable basic services

The provision of equitable basic services such as Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), urban waste management and renewable energy housing solutions is central to community empowerment and system strengthening.

For every partner family receiving a house, a 3000-litre water tank and a complete set of water harvesting system is installed. Additionally, an improved ventilated pit latrine and shower stall are constructed.

Community support

Communities, schools and public institutions safe points such as bore holes and solar powered pump systems are established with trained water committees. FH Uganda conducts mass community awareness on WASH through radio outreaches, posters and documentaries; and carries out trainings and distribution of health and hygiene facilities at households, community and public institutions.

As part of the COVID-19 and the Ebola pandemic response, HFHU distributed health and hygiene facilities such as hand washing cans, liquid soap, hand sanitizers, temperature guns and personal protective equipment to health facilities, schools and marketplaces. These were reinforced by mass media messages on hygiene and individual risk avoidance.

Safe water for all

An external evaluation conducted by LIDA Africa in March 2022, indicated that:
- 80% of the people sensitized on WASH attested that it is safe to drink borehole water than other sources;
- 99.6% of those have constructed VIP latrines in their homes;
- And 30.4% of households have handwashing facilities.
