The Build: Ugandan Volunteers Taking Charge.

Shelter and Settlements volunteers

A build volunteer day was held in Kiryadongo district, Panyadoli IDP Camp,  Mutunda Sub County.  A team of 19 volunteers from Shelter and Settlement Alternatives Uganda: Human Network, staff from Habitat for Humanity Uganda and representatives from  Kiryadongo local government showed support and solidarity to improve the housing conditions of vulnerable groups; by layering bricks, mixing mortar for the construction of Goretti’s house. This was of course  with support and guidance from Action Construction Company Ltd. Most families in Kiryadongo were relocated after the landslides in Bududa, Eastern Uganda.

The 2010 Ugandan landslide occurred in the district of Bududa in eastern Uganda on 1 March 2010. The landslide was triggered by heavy rains. At least 100 people were believed to have been killed and more than 94 bodies found buried by the landslide! Habitat for Humanity in partnership with Office of the Prime Minister and with support from Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) have helped resettle over a hundred and eighty ( 180) families from Bududa to Kiryadongo.

A Complete house with WASH facilities and a water harvesting tank is estimated to cost about 18 million. The build  is a volunteer event through which we call for support from other companies within Uganda to support vulnerable communities access shelter by either contributing financially, in form of building materials or by actually taking part in the construction of a beneficiary’s house in the preferred district. It  involves mobilising volunteer companies through  their Corporate Social Responsibility ( CSR)  and other fundraising strategies.
